great location just steps to BART entrance My room was not clean, it had a previous occupant's dirty laundry and drug paraphernalia under the bed. Uncomfortable mattress. Desk staff were pretty rude to each other and to hotel guests. When I handed in a comment card at the end of my stay, the receptionist put it in a pile of paper on top of the copier and said "I hope they read it." All of this would have been fine for a cheap hotel in the city, but this was not a cheap hotel.
The bed was excellent great sleep. Rooms very small and bathroom smaller than Crusie ship bathrooms. Toilet broke and had to wait several hours for repair person to show up. The lobby looked great but then we walked into our room
mold in the bathroom , the carpets stinks , and an over all sense of uncleanliness , very rode staff
I liked how quiet the hotel was , and how cozy the room was. Hotel is outdated , bathrooms are small , AC is old , carpet was dirty , electrical outlets were tough to find and in hard to reach areas (crawled under a desk) water pressure was weak for the shower , there was gum on the wall,
The only I like was the location I wasn't pleased with the costumer service experience. The shower curtain was on the floor, and the room wasn't ready. They didn't have towels. The elevators are beyond slow and their inspection expired since 2012. The fire alarm went off 2 times. and they were not prepare to evacuate. the stairs are narrow and the communication wasnt great. Uncomfortable beds, and noisy
The location was fantastic as was the historical feel.
The food is very good at the restaurant Parking was $40.
The location The smell of the room The quality of the beds The "customer service" The amount payed Overall, terrible experience. I won't be back and will not recommend this hotel.
Staff, cleanliness, location The heater was insufficient.
I liked that it was simple and clean. No sound proofing. So if you're next to neighbors who are just a bit louder than normal, you would hear them. The place looks out dated. There is no room service. Reception wasn't very approachable. Not very friendly.
+ THE STAFF: Every single staff member we encountered went above and beyond their duties to be very friendly and extremely helpful! + THE BEDS!!!: Oh my gosh those beds and those pillows were heavenly! + THE HISTORY: I initially chose to stay here because of the hotel's great history, but I was thrilled to see that on the Mezzanine level they actually have a "Hall of History" with wonderful artifacts from the Whitcomb's heyday along with a couple of glass cabinets throughout the lobby area with even more old artifacts. There is also an art gallery dedicated to a couple of the local theaters/acts with pictures etc, that date from the early Jazz age to around WW2. The Hotel Whitcomb served as the City Hall after the 1906 earthquake while the original one was being rebuilt, and I read that there are still jail cells that in the basement that you can see if you ask, but unfortunately I didn't have time to do that this time but I'll be sure to ask next time because I will definitely be coming back - THE AREA: The traffic is atrocious! It is so easy to get lost because of all the one way streets and no left turns etc.
The lobby was beautiful, the staff was very helpful & accommodating. Easy check in, ready available bell staff & quick valet service. Checking in & out was a freeze. Our room was quaint & adorable. Comfortable beds & clean. Walking distance to union square, shopping & restaurant & entertainment! We will be using this hotel as our future staple!
I like how the front desk guy told me, since I stay here so much I should know when they advertise free parking they mean some time or when available. But, I didn't know in fact it is the reason I stayed loyal to the motel. I feel more of an effort should have been made to keep my reservation, instead he shrugged me off and I un check in and stayed at the same if not better motel on Lombard for a lower price and parking for all there guests. I didn't like the mis advertising of free parking. You should state limited free parking.
renovated bed rooms with nice decor & comfortable bed; clean close to Hayes Valley, a true SF neighborhood currently under construction, paint works going on resulting in smells & noise; NOT disclosed on web site prior to booking! close to projects; doors are open during cleaning/painting and homeless people wandering around the lot, resulting in safety concerns; no safe in room bathrooms need renovation, stained tub and toilet; 70s decor night staff rude, seemed to have little hospitality training/experience
I appreciated the proximity of the facility to the building in which I attended a conference. I was able to walk there if necessary, or be transported with ease by colleagues. The rooms were clean and well-arranged. I was prepared for typical downtown noise and heard very little of that. I felt safe on the property. My only criticism concerns the breakfast offered. I think for the price that perhaps a few selections could be added without "breaking the bank," e.g., a griddle or waffle maker or variety of fruit.
The free parking and destinations within a few blocks. Not much in the immediate vicinity.
Wonderful, responsive staff. Room was a little small. Breakfast was very fresh.
Kind staff Too small room than the price I paid

The best thing about this hotel was that they offered cookies in the late afternoon, and all day tea/coffee. Room and beds are small. No air conditioning in the room. In room coffee was not replenished. Bathroom very outdated. Room service did not clean the room, all they did was make the bed. The elevator is old and frightening. Staff is very curt with guests.

Nice staff and clean hotel. Very nice complimentary breakfast. entranxe and lobby area tastefully decorated. Inadequate closer space & barely any drawer space. Very short sink in bathroom. Sink is fine for people 5'6 and below. Room was very stuffy due to small size so window needed to be cracked open. Problem with window being own is lots of noise outside.
The continental breakfast was nice (nothing amazing, but a decent selection). Free WiFi was a good feature (but it is too slow to stream anything). Location 10 minutes from a BART was convenient and two blocks away is a nice strip of small restaurants. This was NOT a 3.5 star place. It was dated and the room was small and there was no air conditioning. I know the Bay area does not get hot often, but it meant to stay comfortable you had to keep your window open and that meant hearing traffic all night.
Good continental breakfast, helpful staff, complimentary cookies that were tasty, clean room, eco-friendly, microwave/fridge/silverware in room No central heat/AC, street noise
Tiny roomNoisy , No ac Expensive Parking

The location of this hotel within the city Complimentary breakfast Amenities Hotel Staff
The room was adorable, spacious, clean, and comfortable. The staff was super friendly. The 24/7 coffee and water was a nice touch as were the 3pm cookies. The hotel and experience overall far exceeded my expectations.
Friendly people at reception
The staff was very friendly and supporting.
Very friendly hotel staffs, family style hotel, and quient environment. Nothing should be complained. Only disadvantages are 1) It is a bit far from the Union Square area, 2) You have to share restroom and bathroom with other guests.
Inexpensive good-value hotel. Friendly, easygoing and down-to-earth staff. Nice and informal atmosphere. The room and hallways had a charmingly dowdy appeareance, a bit like some grandmother's home, which makes for a nice personal touch. Big bay windows and York mints in the room on arrival. The hotel is located in a somewhat trendy, upscale-ish, village-like neighbourhood, with cafés, bakeries, various boutiques and public transportation easily accessible. I stayed in a 2nd floor street-facing room, and while not a major issue there was a bit of traffic noise. Light sleepers might want to bring earplugs or ask for a room facing away from the street. The shared bath is kind of dinky, and the bedspread in my room has probably seen better days.
The 24 hour desk and the flexible times for breakfast There was only one shower / bath per floor
The staff were all very friendly and hospitable, It was a good place to meet people if you felt like a chat at the breakfast table. The continental breakfast was also quite nice, and there are some amazing art galleries, home decor shops and funky boutiques near by , It is also near public transport The carpets look like they could do with a clean, but I believe they will be changed soon as they are in the middle of changing hands. Also there are a lot of homeless people around but once you get used to it it isn't as threatening as it initially looks
The very helpful staff and the cozy atmosphere of the hotel.
Dennis at reception was a dear and wonderfully warm and helpful. And the continental breakfast was such a pleasant surprise. it reminded me of Dutch B&B with cold cuts, hard boiled eggs and even muffins & hot toast & juice ... excellent value for money. The shared single bathrooms was a trifle tiresome with so many people waiting. Otherwise the stairs would be a challenge for those with heavy bags.
Breakfast in a family atmosphere.
it was cild in my room (309) the beakfeast was very good and the people in the hotel too.
Had a great common area with a fireplace and a good basic breakfast. Overall a great place! Rooms are the perfect size and clean and bathroom I had was large. If you're a light sleeper, DO NOT stay here. Street is extremely busy most of the time, windows/walls didn't block any sound. It was also a little odd that the bartender/bar was also the front desk so if you needed something you had to call the bar.
Loved the eclectic feeling of this hotel! The staff was super friendly and helpful. There is a big common space/ living room and 24 hour open snacks that gave us the comfort of being at home. The room was clean and comfortable and felt private. The restaurant below is open late with great food and drinks, the perfect place to come back to after long days roaming the city.
That there was a bar right below us. I really liked to free breakfast and the staff was very nice! There was nothing that I disliked :)
