What to know about COVID-19 (coronavirus) and travel

We know things are changing by the minute and, as travelers ourselves, it can be overwhelming to know what to do. That’s why we’ve gathered the information you need on the latest restrictions and changes, whether you have travel booked or are considering future travel. From new filters and alerts to partner cancellation policies, we can help you make travel decisions for you and your loved ones.

As airlines and hotels update their policies, we’ve added a filter that lets you sort your search results to see the providers offering free cancellations (usually in the form of travel credits) or waiving change fees. (As always, it’s good practice to check a provider’s full policy when you book.)

COVID-19 and travel: Your most frequently asked questions

In response to the rapid changes in the epidemic around the world, governments around the world have called on citizens to adjust their itineraries to avoid all unnecessary travel. Countries around the world have also imposed different travel restrictions that will affect travel arrangements. Please refer to the Outbound Travel Alert of the Security Bureau before deciding to travel.

Members of the public are strongly urged to avoid non-essential travel outside Hong Kong. If it is unavoidable to travel to countries/areas outside Hong Kong, please pay close attention to the travel health advice issued by the Center for Health Protection, as well as the mandatory quarantine measures. If you are in a foreign country and need assistance, you can call the Immigration Department’s Assistance to Hong Kong Residents 24-Hour Hotline at (852) 1868 or contact the Chinese Embassy

Travel insurance is generally a good idea with international travel (be sure to also check coverage offered by your insurance provider). However, if you’re purchasing it due to concerns related to COVID-19, be sure to read the policy carefully as rules may differ by company. It also may not widely cover cancellation or offer the travel flexibility you’re seeking. We recommend checking with your insurance provider to determine whether you are covered.
