Accommodation is an essential part of any trip, with even the most active travellers needing a place to rest and take a break on holiday. And recent research shows that travellers from Hong Kong have especially high standards, and are willing to spend to indulge themselves, with 34% Hong Kong travellers choosing to stay at 5-star luxury hotels, the highest percentage amongst Asia Pacific travellers*.
We’ve taken a deep dive into hotel search habits for Hong Kong travellers to find out where they are searching for hotels most, their average length of stay, how much they spend, and what their preferences are when it comes to accommodation, and the data may surprise you, with searches for staycations in Hong Kong ranking more popular than any other destination.
According to data revealed in our Hotel Travel Report, an overwhelming 94% of Hong Kong travellers prefer hotels that are at least mid-range (3-stars) or above, with 34% opting for luxury 5-star hotels. For short stays, top destinations including Hong Kong, Seoul, Bangkok, Macau and Taipei have an average price of less than HK$991 per room/night in a 3-star or 4-star hotel.

The data shows that more and more of us are considering fancy staycations right here in Hong Kong rather than travelling elsewhere for a break – even for long stays of 2 or more weeks. For short stays, Hong Kong staycations top the search rankings for hotel searches, followed by Seoul, Bangkok and Macau. For longer breaks of 1-2 weeks, Bangkok is the top destination for Hong Kong travellers while searches for Hong Kong come second. As for long-haul destinations like London and New York, it looks like Hong Kong travellers only consider planning trips to these places when they have longer breaks of 2 or more weeks – but even then, they are less popular than simply finding a nice place to relax at home.
